The Pole Seekers

Chapters 3, 4 & 5

What is happening in the story?

What are some techniques that the author is using to make the book interesting to read?

Are there any unusual words that you have come across? What are they? What do they mean?

I think that this will be a very good book. The rat telling the story will probably go to Antartica. It is quite interesting so far though I think that the grammar is a little old-fashioned and it is a bit predictable.

The author has used lots of adjectives that are making the story more harsh & it is making it sound more realistic. This story is a random story but it is a story about rats that will go to the Unknown South Land (Antarctica) but they have no idea what it is like. Then and an weird
rat with shaggy fur twice as thick as longs as normal rat fur, hunched over his shoulders, called Pedro, told the other rats about when he went to The Southern Unknown Land (Antarctica) how bitter and cold it was. He then tells them that they will probably never return because the coldness of Antarctica will blister them and that they will be left in a dead group of fur. They then all shivered.....

I think that they will go on an extrordinary adventure of a lifetime and they will explore Antarctica.

I think the author used alot of describing words in the first two chapters. I think she used so many to make the story more frightning.

i think all the rats will end up going to a far South Land {Antarctica} with a shagy rat named Pedro

I think that the book so far is interesting. In the beginning of the book there are some rats who are fighting for their rights and territories so they have to travel to the unknown lands in the south.

I think that the auther, Meredith Hooper has described the story so far well.

I think that Eddie, Hackle, Pedro and Blackwall just to name a few will travel to Antartica.

I agree with Amy I think it is really predictable: a rat & his friends goes to Antarctica, it is a really hard journey.....

I quite aggree with the comments that others have posted. It does sound really harsh as Miki has already said. The author has really used the adgectives to get her view accross, making a picture of the shaggy rat in peoples imagination, and creating a ship-like theme, a harsh Antarctic continent, or simply extroadanary beauty. I think that it is very well written, though the author could really made the structure much better (eg. writing longer sentences.)
PS cheerie_happy_aimie@msn.com is Amy-me, just in case you were wondering.
But it is a very good book, and very gripping!!!=o)

I think Miki is right about all the rats going to Antarctica and. I dont know about them all dying but they will be very cold.

The auther did use a lot of describing words (adjectives)and I like I wrote on my coment to Amys comment, it is a bit predictable.

It is great that most of you have noticed that the author has used a lot of adjectives in the first two chapters of the book. The use of these adjectives has allowed for you all to have a picture in your mind about what the boat looks like and how the characters look also. It will be interesting to see if the author continues to use adjectives (to the extent that she has in chapters 1 and 2) throughout the rest of the book or if it has just been to set the scene.

In the story some rats are going to the Unknown land of the South (Antarctica). They are suffering many hardships on their voyage like leakings in the wooden boat and FIRE!!!

Meredith Hooper (the auther) has described the story very well so far in the book. She is making the story sound really life like.

Hefties is a strange word and it means men.

The rats have all left the port to go to Antarctica. They are trying to get there before the evil brown rats find out about their plans/get there before them. It is a very good book as I have said beforehand a million times and I have not changed my veiws about it and I am wondering what I will type next as I have said my opinion and it has not changed.
I hope that something major will happen soon!!!

Heckle, Pedro, Edddie and the rest of the voleteers have left port for Antarctica.
They have already encounted many hardships in their voyage such as a leak, a fire on their woooden ship and having to leave loved ones, Vanilla (Eddie's Wife) and Clammy (Heckles Girlfriend) behind.

Some of the interesting techniques that Merideth Hooper has used:
Well she likes to leave a lot of suspense between the chapters. It leaves you wanting the next day to come so you can read more.

Some interesting words that we have come across are:
Hefties - the men on board ship,
and ummm yer ummm.

Excellent comment Alana. It seems you are really looking at the way that the author has written the book.

Amy, I am wondering if you could look deeper into the way that the author has written this book. What techniques is she using to make it interesting?
Has she written it for a specific audience? How can you tell? See if you can think about questions like these to help with your postings.

She (Merideth Cooper) has written with extraordinary suspense, like Lana has already said. Also she has short sentences, but there are more of them. I think that the book has been going a bit too fast, everything is happening in a hurry. It is like a minute in the book goes by every second in real life.
She creates themes, creating it in our imaginations as if we were in a movie theartre, watching it happen in front of our very eyes. I wish I had a copy of that book, it would be finished within the hour. It is too gripping and addictive for my liking!!!
